A Silver Spring man has been charged with distribution of fentanyl resulting in the death of a minor victim.
Mikiyas Maryie Kefyalew, 24, was arrested on September 16, 2022 and charged with distribution of fentanyl resulting in death.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, Kefyalew was charged after a minor victim died from a fentanyl overdose in January 2022. A forensic chemist later tested a counterfeit pill that appeared to be 30mg of oxycodone and found it to be fentanyl.
The pill was discovered after law enforcement discovered alleged texts between the victim and Kefyalew. A witness also came forward and stated that the victim had purchased ‘percs’ from an individual known as ‘Mick’, which matched the pill found at the time of the victim’s death.
Kefyalew was previously issued a criminal citation in August 2021 for possession of over 10 grams of marijuana. During that arrest, a small blue pill stamped with the writing ‘M 30’ was found to be fentanyl.
If convicted, Kefyalew faces a maximum sentence of life in federal prison. A federal district court judge will determine the sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
Kefyalew is currently being held pending trial.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Wright.
