Abdelhamid Al-Madioum, ISIS Support, Minnesota 2024

MINNEAPOLIS – Abdelhamid Al-Madioum, 27, of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, will spend the next decade behind bars after being sentenced to 120 months in prison for providing material support to ISIS, the brutal terrorist organization also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham. The sentence, handed down today by U.S. District Judge Ann D. Montgomery, also includes 15 years of supervised release – a lifetime of monitoring for a man who willingly joined a group dedicated to bloodshed.

Court documents reveal a calculated betrayal. In June 2015, Al-Madioum traveled to Morocco with his family under the guise of a familial visit. But while his family enjoyed time with relatives in Casablanca, Al-Madioum slipped away, embarking on a dangerous journey to Syria. His goal: to pledge allegiance and fight for ISIS. He didn’t just offer prayers or donations; he actively joined their ranks.

Once in Syria, Al-Madioum wasn’t a bystander. He was quickly integrated into ISIS, undergoing military training and assigned to a battalion. For months, he served as a foot soldier, fighting on behalf of the terrorist group. The details of his battlefield activities remain largely obscured, but the evidence clearly showed his direct involvement in ISIS’s military operations. His service ended only after sustaining injuries during combat in late 2015.

Even wounded, Al-Madioum didn’t abandon ISIS. He transitioned to a support role, leveraging his skills as a personnel database administrator. He continued to serve the organization, maintaining records and assisting in their operations from the shadows. He remained a committed member until March 2019, when he was finally captured by the Syrian Democratic Forces – a turning point that ultimately led to his return to face justice in the United States.

Al-Madioum initially appeared in U.S. District Court in Minnesota on September 16, 2020, facing charges of providing material support to ISIS. He pleaded guilty on January 13, 2021, to one count of the offense. While his cooperation with authorities earned him consideration for a reduced sentence, Judge Montgomery deemed 10 years necessary to reflect the gravity of his actions. Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew R. Winter and Trial Attorney John Cella led the prosecution.

The investigation was spearheaded by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, highlighting the ongoing efforts to dismantle terrorist networks and bring those who support them to justice. This case serves as a stark reminder that providing any form of support to designated foreign terrorist organizations carries severe consequences. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and report on all federal criminal activity across the nation.
