A tangled web of deceit and deadly pills has finally been unraveled, as a Bloomington, Illinois couple, Christina Noonan, 44, and her husband Wesley Noonan, 50, were sentenced to federal prison for their roles in a massive fentanyl trafficking ring.
On May 8, 2024, U.S. District Judge James E. Shadid handed down the sentences: Christina Noonan received 70 months in prison, followed by a three-year term of supervised release, while her husband, Wesley Noonan, was sentenced to 48 months in prison and a five-year term of supervised release.
The pair used their home in Bloomington as a distribution center, coordinating with an overseas source to obtain parcels of pills. They then utilized a popular phone application to further distribute the deadly substances across the United States using the United States Postal Service.
According to prosecutors, the Noonans distributed over 1,750 parcels containing over 250,000 Schedule I, II, and IV pills between February 2021 and April 2022. The shipments included a mix of Tramadol, Zolpidem, Cathinone, Adderall, Lorazepam, Hydrocodone, Percocet, and other substances.
However, a distribution log revealed that Christina Noonan, with her husband’s assistance, mailed the majority of these parcels, which included approximately 1,750 pills marked as Adderall, but which tested positive as para-Fluorofentanyl, a Schedule I opioid analgesic analogue of fentanyl.
The investigation, led by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration Diversion Unit, revealed that the Noonans’ operation was a complex web of deceit, with the couple using the USPS to ship deadly pills across the country. The case highlights the growing threat of fentanyl trafficking and the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to counter it.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Ronald L. Hanna praised the cooperation between law enforcement agencies and highlighted the dangers of taking illicitly obtained pills. “This case demonstrates how illegal drug distribution is ever-evolving and how law enforcement will use all available tools to counter it. It also shows why taking illegally obtained pills is extremely dangerous.”
