Miranda D. Swiger, Heroin Trafficking, West Virginia 2015

CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A local woman has been convicted of heroin trafficking, marking a significant blow to the state’s ongoing struggle with opioid addiction.

Miranda D. Swiger, 21, of Stonewood, West Virginia, was convicted of heroin trafficking today in federal court, announced United States Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II.

Swiger, also known as “MiMi,” was discovered in possession of heroin in January 2015 in Taylor County, West Virginia. She pled guilty today to one count of “Possession with Intent to Distribute Heroin – Aiding and Abetting.”

The conviction stems from a HIDTA-funded investigation conducted by the Greater Harrison County Drug and Violent Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Zelda Wesley and former Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn Morgan prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.

Swiger faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1,000,000. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

The case was heard before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael J. Aloi, who presided over the proceedings.

While the conviction is a positive step towards combating heroin trafficking in West Virginia, it is only one part of a larger effort to address the state’s opioid epidemic. Law enforcement agencies and government officials continue to work together to curb the flow of heroin and other illicit substances into the state.
