A 37-year-old man from Mission, South Dakota, has been charged with Aggravated Sexual Abuse of a Child, a federal crime that carries a maximum penalty of life in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Iran Small Bear, also known as Ivan Small Bear, was indicted by a federal grand jury on June 12, 2018, for the crimes, which allegedly took place between July 27, 2016, and April 19, 2018.
The indictment alleges that Small Bear knowingly engaged in and attempted to engage in sexual acts and contact with a minor female during that time period.
Small Bear appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on July 30, 2018, and pleaded not guilty to the indictment.
The investigation into the case is being conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson prosecuting the case.
Small Bear was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial, which has not yet been scheduled.
The charges against Small Bear are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
