A 37-year-old man has been locked up for harboring undocumented aliens, announced U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani. Miguel Angel Nunez-Urrea, a non-US citizen, pleaded guilty on November 30, 2023.
Chief U.S. District Judge Randy Crane ordered Nunez-Urrea to serve 41 months in federal prison. Following his sentence, he’s expected to face removal proceedings. At the hearing, the court heard testimony that the firearms Nunez-Urrea possessed were capable of accepting large capacity magazines. Judge Crane noted the effect these actions had on Nunez-Urrea’s family during sentencing.
A stash house investigation led to Nunez-Urrea’s residence in Mission, Texas, where authorities discovered seven undocumented aliens hiding in the attic above a child’s bedroom. His wife, Kenia Anguiano-Sanchez, 30, was previously sentenced after pleading guilty.
On September 26, 2023, authorities encountered a group of undocumented aliens near Falfurrias, triggering an investigation. Law enforcement conducted a search at the couple’s residence on October 11, 2023, and found a loaded pistol, a .22 caliber rifle, and high-capacity magazines in the bedroom.
Further investigation revealed text messages detailing the planned transfer of undocumented migrants to the Houston area after they stayed with Nunez-Urrea and his wife. The investigation was conducted by Border Patrol with the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jose A. Garcia prosecuted the case.
Nunez-Urrea and Anguiano-Sanchez will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future. This case highlights the growing issue of stash houses and human trafficking along the US-Mexico border.
