Mission Woman Charged in Second Degree Murder

Rae Dawn Lunderman, a 28-year-old woman from Mission, South Dakota, has been charged with Second Degree Murder, Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, and Child Abuse, according to a federal indictment.

The U.S. Attorney’s office announced that Lunderman was indicted on December 9, 2014, by a federal grand jury. She appeared in court on December 31, 2014, and pleaded not guilty to the indictment.

The charges carry a maximum penalty of up to life in prison and/or a $250,000 fine, 5 years of supervised release, and $500 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

The indictment alleges that on August 11, 2013, Lunderman, along with Tyler Erickson, committed a heinous crime, murdering and assaulting a human being who had not yet reached the age of 18. The indictment also alleges that between August 1, 2013, and August 10, 2013, Lunderman abused two children who had not yet turned 7 years old.

The charges are mere accusations, and Lunderman is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher is prosecuting the case.

Lunderman was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial, which has been set for February 24, 2015. The community is left to wonder what drove Lunderman to commit such a heinous crime, and the trial will likely provide further insight into the tragic events that unfolded in 2013.
