Two Mission Women Sentenced for Burglary
Tara Makes Room For Them and Victoria Brown, both 19, have been sentenced to prison for their roles in a string of burglaries on the Rosebud Reservation in January 2013.
The women, along with one other person, broke into three homes and stole property that did not belong to them. The investigation was conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services.
On August 28 and 29, 2013, Makes Room For Them and Brown respectively, were sentenced by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange. Makes Room For Them received 2 months of imprisonment, 4 months of home confinement, 18 months of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Brown received the same sentence as Makes Room For Them, including the $100 special assessment. Both women were also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $3,341.99 to three separate burglary victims.
The women were indicted by a federal grand jury in February 2013 and pled guilty on June 13, 2013. The remaining co-defendant will be sentenced in September. The cases were prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher. The women were immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
The burglary incidents took place on January 16, 2013, when Makes Room For Them, Brown, and one other person targeted three homes on the Rosebud Reservation. The stolen property was taken without the owners’ permission.
The investigation and prosecution of the case highlights the importance of effective law enforcement and the need for individuals to respect the property rights of others.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Dakota has a zero-tolerance policy for violent crime and is committed to working with law enforcement agencies to keep communities safe and hold offenders accountable for their actions.
