New Orleans, LA – In a brazen display of chutzpah, William Gilchrist, a 29-year-old from Greenville, Mississippi, was sentenced on June 24, 2025, for the audacious crime of impersonating a U.S. Marshal. The defendant faced Judge Susie Morgan’s bench and walked away with a stern three years of probation and a $4,000 fine.
Gilchrist, who pleaded guilty to violating Title 18, United States Code, Section 912, was caught red-handed on June 19, 2024, falsely donning the garb and authority of a Fugitive Task Force Officer with the United States Marshals Service. The fraudster’s ploy was foiled when authorities uncovered his fraudulent act.
Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson commended the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations for their diligent work in unraveling this deplorable deception. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul J. Hubbell of the General Crimes Unit was at the helm, leading the prosecution against Gilchrist.
Despite his attempt to masquerade as a federal law enforcement officer, Gilchrist’s charade fell apart when he was indentified as an impostor. His sentence underscores the serious nature of impersonating a federal official and the consequences faced by those who dare to play at being someone they are not.
This case serves as a stark reminder that the justice system will hold individuals accountable for their actions, regardless of how they seek to misrepresent themselves.
