GAINESVILLE, Ga. – Mitchell Logan Reeves has been sentenced to eight years and eight months in federal prison for robbing the Homer branch of the Habersham Federal Credit Union on July 30, 2015.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Reeves entered the credit union wearing a black mask and tan hat, pointed a firearm directly at a lone teller’s face, and demanded that she give him all the money in her teller drawer. The teller handed over $1,729.00, and Reeves fled the scene.
Banks County Sheriff’s Office deputies quickly set up a perimeter around the wooded area where Reeves was seen running and apprehended him within a short time. Officers recovered the stolen money, as well as a fully loaded Smith and Wesson .9 mm handgun and Reeves’ black mask, tan hat, and other clothing.
U.S. Attorney John Horn commended the outstanding deputies from the Banks County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for their prompt actions, which led to Reeves’ capture and the recovery of the stolen money.
David J. LeValley, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Atlanta Field Office, praised the responding deputies for their quick and safe capture of Reeves, saying it ‘afforded him time to reflect on his extremely poor choices.’
Reeves, 24, of Gainesville, Georgia, pleaded guilty on March 29, 2016, to charges of robbing the credit union and using a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence. He was sentenced to eight years and eight months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.
Assistant U.S. Attorney William L. McKinnon, Jr. prosecuted the case. The investigation was conducted by the Banks County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
