MOBILE, ALA. – In a stunning blow to the local drug trade, former American Supermarket owner Yahya A. Abdelhadi, 34, of Mobile, Alabama, was sentenced this afternoon to 72 months in federal prison for his role in distributing ‘Spice,’ the synthetic marijuana that has left countless users high and authorities on edge.
The sentence, handed down by United States District Court Judge Callie V. S. Granade, also mandates a concurrent three-year term of supervised release upon Abdelhadi’s release from incarceration. The court did not impose a fine but ordered him to pay $300 in special mandatory assessments.
Abdelhadi’s downfall began in 2014 when Mobile County sheriff’s deputies conducted controlled buys of ‘Spice’ at his store, leading to an undercover investigation that uncovered a vast network of distribution. In April 2015, Abdelhadi pleaded guilty to three counts of conspiracy: conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, conspiracy to distribute controlled substance analogues, and conspiracy to launder drug money.
The sentence comes after a thorough investigation by the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Homeland Security. Assistant United States Attorney Gloria Bedwell prosecuted the case with unwavering determination, ensuring justice was served for those affected by Abdelhadi’s illegal activities.
Despite his conviction, Abdelhadi remains silent on the streets of Mobile, as authorities continue their efforts to dismantle the drug networks that have plagued the community. For now, he is just another name in the federal prison system, a reminder of the harsh consequences for those who choose to profit from the sale of dangerous drugs.
