Assaulting a Federal Officer Lands Mobridge Man in Hot Water

Ed Charles LeClair, IV, a 22-year-old Mobridge resident, has been charged with Assaulting, Resisting, or Impeding a Federal Officer Involving Physical Contact. The indictment, handed down by a federal grand jury on September 16, 2014, alleges that LeClair forcibly assaulted a Dewey County Deputy Sheriff on July 27, 2014, while the officer was assisting federal law enforcement.

According to the indictment, LeClair’s actions were in direct opposition to the performance of the officer’s duties. The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 8 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

LeClair appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on September 22, 2014, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The investigation is being conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Dewey County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson is prosecuting the case.

LeClair was released on bond pending trial. A trial date has not been set. The charge is merely an accusation, and LeClair is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
