A former Syrian Assad prison official has been convicted of torture and immigration fraud in the United States. Mohammed Al-Shihabi was found guilty on February 27, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
According to the Department of Justice, Al-Shihabi was a former official at the Syrian government’s Saydnaya Prison, where he was involved in the torture and mistreatment of detainees. The conviction follows an investigation by the Department of Justice’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the U.S. Department of State. Al-Shihabi faces up to 20 years in prison for the torture charges and up to 10 years for the immigration fraud charges.
