Bridgette Rivers, a resident of Montgomery, Ala., has been indicted by a federal grand jury for her alleged role in a massive stolen identity refund fraud scheme.
According to the indictment, Rivers conspired with others to use stolen identities, including her own, to file fraudulent tax returns requesting refunds from the IRS. She is also accused of enlisting another individual to provide her with bank account details, which were used to receive and distribute the stolen funds.
The scheme, which is now under investigation, is said to have funnelled substantial amounts of money into Rivers’ hands. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison on conspiracy charges and theft of government funds, along with fines and mandatory forfeiture and restitution.
This case has been a collaborative effort between the IRS-Criminal Investigation, with Trial Attorneys Michael Boteler and Jason Poole leading the Justice Department’s Tax Division in prosecution. Assistant United States Attorney Todd Brown has provided significant support from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama.
While an indictment does not equate to guilt, the charges against Rivers are serious and carry severe penalties if she is found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
