Thomas Dale Sass, SSA Benefit Theft, Arkansas 2023

Monticello’s Sass Sentenced for SSA Fraud

LITTLE ROCK—In a shocking betrayal of trust, Thomas “Dale” Sass, 50, of Monticello, has been sentenced to over four years in prison for stealing government funds intended for the care of his disabled relative. United States District Judge Kristine G. Baker handed down a 57-month sentence, accompanied by three years of supervised release and a restitution order of $297,516.

Sass’s crime came to light after he pleaded guilty to one count of theft of government funds on August 25, 2016. The money Sass stole was meant for the care of his former sister-in-law, who had been in a coma following a car accident that also took the life of her son.

As the guardian of his injured relative, Sass was entrusted with managing her monthly disbursements from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and private insurance. But instead of using the funds to care for her, Sass embezzled them for his own gain. His betrayal did not stop there; Sass also forged his brother’s name on SSA checks to continue receiving payments.

United States Attorney Patrick C. Harris emphasized the gravity of Sass’s actions, stating, “We are vigilant in our prosecution of those who exploit the elderly, children, and disabled. This case is a stark reminder of our commitment to protect their well-being.”

Robert G. Feldt, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Social Security Administration’s Office of Inspector General (SSA/OIG), echoed Harris’s sentiment, promising that his office will continue to investigate and prosecute SSA program fraud.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between the SSA/OIG and the Arkansas Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigation Division. Assistant United States Attorney Erin O’Leary prosecuted the case.
