A convicted child pornography offender has been sentenced to 11 years in federal prison for continuing to hoard the vile material, despite being on supervised release.
Thomas Wright, a 63-year-old man from Moriah Center, New York, was slapped with the lengthy sentence after admitting to possessing 29,712 images and 276 videos of child pornography on an unauthorized smartphone.
The crime was uncovered during an unannounced home visit by Wright’s supervising federal probation officers, who were monitoring his activities as part of his supervised release from a 2014 federal conviction for distributing, receiving, and possessing child pornography.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children identified 4,835 of the images and 55 of the recovered video files as depicting 197 separate children whose images are in their database of known victims.
As part of his sentence, Wright was also ordered to pay a total of $81,000 in restitution to the victims depicted in the child pornography he possessed, as well as forfeit the smartphone used to commit the offense. He will be placed on 25 years of supervised release following his term of imprisonment and will continue to be required to register as a sex offender.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa M. Fletcher, Project Safe Childhood Coordinator for the Northern District of New York, prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Mid-State Child Exploitation Task Force.
The sentence sends a strong message that those who continue to engage in such heinous crimes will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
Wright’s sentence includes a consecutive 12-month term of imprisonment for violating the conditions of his supervised release from his prior offense.
