Alex Lee Salway, Morphine Distribution, Florida 2024

BREAKING: A Martin man has been sentenced to prison for distributing morphine pills near an elementary school. Alex Lee Salway, 54, was found guilty of two counts of Distribution of a Controlled Substance.

According to court documents, Salway sold and distributed morphine pills within 1,000 feet of the Martin Grade School at two separate times on January 27, 2012. A federal jury in Rapid City found Salway guilty of both counts on June 20, 2013.

The case was investigated by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services, the Martin Police Department, and the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force.

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Salway was sentenced by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken on September 12, 2013. Salway received 12 months and 1 day on each count to run concurrently, 6 years of supervised release on each count to run concurrently, and a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Salway remained in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura A. Shattuck prosecuted the case.
