COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA – Kevin Timothy Morrissey, 60, of Oakland, Iowa, will spend the next fifteen years behind bars after being sentenced to 180 months in prison for the vile crime of receiving and possessing child pornography. Chief United States District Court Judge John A. Jarvey handed down the sentence on May 17, 2017, following Morrissey’s December 21, 2016 conviction by a jury.
United States Attorney Kevin E. VanderSchel announced the sentencing, detailing that Morrissey will also face ten years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term. The court also levied a hefty $15,000 fine, a meager penalty for the damage inflicted on the innocent children depicted in the material he hoarded.
The case unfolded after a routine parole visit in January of 2016. Law enforcement discovered Morrissey was violating the terms of his supervision by accessing the internet. A subsequent search of his Oakland residence revealed a sickening trove of digital depravity: numerous images and a single video depicting the sexual abuse of children. The devices seized painted a disturbing picture of a predator preying on the vulnerable.
Federal investigators weren’t simply stumbling upon this. This was a parole check that went sideways, revealing a dark underbelly. The fact that Morrissey was already under supervision speaks to a history of questionable behavior, a history he clearly didn’t learn from. The details of his prior offenses remain largely obscured, but the current conviction solidifies him as a threat to children.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation Task Force, with crucial support from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation – Iowa Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the Iowa Probation and Parole Office for the 4th Judicial District, and the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office. These agencies worked tirelessly to gather evidence and bring Morrissey to justice, proving that those who exploit children will be held accountable.
The prosecution of this case fell to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa. For further information regarding this release, contact Rachel J.
