Mosby’s Mortgage Mayhem: Ex-State’s Attorney Sentenced to 12 Months of Home Confinement

Greenbelt, Maryland – In a stunning blow to the once-respected former Baltimore City State’s Attorney, Marilyn J. Mosby, 44, of Baltimore, Maryland was slapped with a 12-month sentence of home confinement for making a false mortgage application and two counts of perjury. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Lydia K. Griggsby, is part of a 36-month supervised release, with the first 12 months including electronic monitoring.

Mosby was convicted on February 6, 2024, of making a false mortgage application when she purchased a condominium in Long Boat Key, Florida, while serving as the top law enforcement official in Baltimore. In a separate case, Mosby was convicted on November 9, 2023, of two counts of perjury related to the withdrawal of funds from the City of Baltimore’s Deferred Compensation Plan, claiming she suffered adverse financial consequences during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to court documents, Mosby made false statements on her mortgage application, which led to her obtaining a $430,000 loan. She also falsely claimed that she had experienced financial hardship, despite earning a significant salary as the State’s Attorney. The false statements were used to purchase a condominium in Long Boat Key, Florida, which has since appreciated significantly in value.

Judge Griggsby ordered Mosby to forfeit 90% of the property’s value, including any appreciation. This means that Mosby will be forced to give up a significant portion of the condominium’s value, which has likely increased substantially since her purchase.

U.S. Attorney Erek L. Barron commended the FBI and IRS-CI agents for their work in the investigation, thanking the Baltimore City Office of the Inspector General for its assistance and invaluable public service. Barron also thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sean R. Delaney and Aaron S.J. Zelinsky for their hard work in prosecuting the federal cases.

The sentencing is a significant blow to Mosby, who has been a prominent figure in Baltimore politics for years. Her conviction and sentence serve as a reminder that no one is above the law, and that public officials will be held accountable for their actions.
