Mujera Lung’aho, Fire Bombings, Little Rock AR, 2023

LITTLE ROCK, AR – Justice, however delayed, has arrived for the officers targeted in a brazen wave of attacks two years ago. Five individuals are headed to federal prison after being sentenced for firebombing police vehicles across Little Rock and North Little Rock in late August and early September 2020. The group, motivated by what they called a desire to “attack the institution of the American police structure,” unleashed a series of incendiary and vandalistic assaults on law enforcement.

The ringleader, Mujera Benjamin Lung’aho, 33, of North Little Rock, AR, received the longest sentence: 66 months’ incarceration, plus a hefty $86,099.37 in restitution. Lung’aho, according to court documents, personally threw Molotov cocktails at police cars, igniting one vehicle and completely destroying it. The attacks weren’t random; the group systematically targeted police stations, first attempting to deploy Molotov cocktails at the Little Rock Police Department (LRPD) Northwest Substation, before escalating to outright destruction.

The initial incident on August 25th and 26th saw Lung’aho, Brittany Dawn Jeffrey, 34, of Little Rock, AR, and others attempting to deploy the firebombs at the LRPD substation, but retreated when officers were present. They then moved on to Shannon Hills, Arkansas, where they vandalized a marked police car, breaking a window, slashing a tire, and stealing a toolbox. This was merely a prelude to the more destructive acts to come. Later that night, they attacked the LRPD’s 12th Street Substation, damaging vehicles and launching Molotov cocktails. Two of the cocktails were constructed at Jeffrey’s residence, using gasoline, liquor bottles, and bed sheets.

The violence didn’t stop there. On August 28th, Lung’aho, Renea Goddard, 25, Emily Nowlin, 30, and Aline A. Espinosa-Villegas, 27, all of Little Rock, AR, targeted the Arkansas State Police (ASP) Headquarters. Lung’aho cut a hole in the fence, allowing the group access to the property where they slashed 33 tires on multiple ASP vehicles. Espinosa-Villegas threw a Molotov cocktail that failed to ignite, but Lung’aho successfully ignited one, completely destroying a 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe patrol unit. Further destruction occurred on September 3rd, when the group firebombed a police vehicle at the Rose City Police Station in North Little Rock.

In addition to Lung’aho’s 66-month sentence, Brittany Dawn Jeffrey received 17 months’ incarceration and $529.30 restitution. Emily Nowlin, Aline A. Espinosa-Villegas, and Renea Goddard each received 18 months’ incarceration and $35,956.31, $34,356.31, and $35,956.31 restitution, respectively. Chief U.S. District Court Judge D.P. Marshall Jr. also imposed terms of supervised release: 36 months for Lung’aho, and 24 months for Nowlin, Espinosa-Villegas, and Goddard; Jeffrey received 18 months. It’s worth noting that there is no parole in the federal system – these defendants will serve their full sentences.

The investigation, led by the ATF and the Department of Justice, revealed a calculated and coordinated effort to inflict damage and terrorize law enforcement. While the motives remain murky, the sheer audacity of the attacks, and the willingness to employ dangerous incendiary devices, paint a disturbing picture of escalating anti-police sentiment. The sentences, while significant, may not fully reflect the potential for harm these individuals unleashed on the community.
