Newark, New Jersey – Munir Muhammad, an 18-year-old member of a Newark street gang, has been charged with unlawful possession of a machine gun used in a shooting that left three people injured.
According to a complaint filed in federal court, Muhammad, also known as ‘Mu,’ was arrested on April 12, 2023, while in possession of a 9mm handgun equipped with a machine gun conversion device and loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition in an extended magazine.
The machine gun was later confirmed to have fired 28 rounds during the shooting at the Oscar Miles Housing Complex on April 8, 2023.
Muhammad is charged with one count of possession of a machine gun and possession of an unregistered firearm. The charge of possession of a machine gun carries a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The charge of possession of an unregistered firearm carries a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Muhammad made his initial court appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge José R. Almonte and was detained.
The investigation into the shooting is part of the Violent Crime Initiative (VCI) in Newark, a partnership between federal, state, county, and city agencies to combat violent crime in and around Newark.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Desiree Grace, Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division, in Newark.
