Murder Behind Bars: Life Sentence for Inmate
Ocala, FL – In a shocking turn of events, Boyd Wallace Higginbotham, Jr., 55, has been sentenced to life in federal prison for the brutal murder of fellow inmate Steven Pritchard. The tragic incident occurred on February 20, 2008, at the United States Penitentiary II at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Sumter County, Florida.
According to eyewitnesses, Higginbotham and Pritchard had been involved in an escalating dispute over several days. On the fateful day, Pritchard made threatening comments to Higginbotham, who then calmly walked away from their table, took his tray to the return area, and returned to stab Pritchard multiple times with a homemade knife. The victim suffered stab wounds to his chest, abdomen, back, and forearm.
Pritchard was airlifted to the Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries on March 6, 2008. The case was a shocking reminder of the dangers that lurk within the confines of our nation’s prisons.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Assistant United States Attorney Sam Armstrong prosecuted the case, which led to Higginbotham’s conviction on first-degree murder charges.
As Higginbotham begins his life sentence, the Grimy Times asks: What drives a man to commit such a heinous crime behind bars? Was it a culmination of factors, or was it simply a cold-blooded act of violence?
Higginbotham was serving a sentence for a felon in possession of a firearm conviction at the time of the incident. Pritchard, on the other hand, was serving a sentence for bank robbery. The tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining order and security within our correctional facilities.
