Three men have pleaded guilty to participating in the brutal murder of Joshua Rubin in 2011. Kevin Taylor, 28, Gary Robles, 38, and Michael Mazur, 27, were accused of shooting and killing Rubin after a botched marijuana robbery in Brooklyn, New York on October 31, 2011.
According to court documents, Taylor arranged to purchase a pound of marijuana from Rubin over the phone, while Robles agreed to bring a firearm to the robbery. Mazur served as the lookout, and when Rubin refused to hand over the marijuana, Robles shot and killed him.
After the murder, the trio disposed of Rubin’s body in rural Pennsylvania, pouring lighter fluid over the body and setting it on fire. Taylor and Robles pleaded guilty today, while Mazur had previously pleaded guilty on July 1, 2021.
U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss praised the efforts of law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New York City Police Department, and the Special Agents of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, for their dedication to solving the case.
Each defendant faces significant prison time, with Taylor and Robles scheduled to be sentenced on January 3, 2022, and Mazur set to be sentenced on October 6, 2021. The statutory maximum penalties include 20 years in prison for Hobbs Act robbery and five years for conspiracy charges.
The case is being prosecuted by the Office’s Violent and Organized Crime Unit, with Assistant United States Attorneys Alexandra N. Rothman and Molly O’Mealia leading the investigation. The Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the South Whitehall Township Police Department also provided assistance in the investigation.
Taylor also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery and conspiracy to commit witness tampering, with each charge carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison. Robles pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery and conspiracy to distribute marijuana, with each charge carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
