A Murdo man has been charged with serious firearm violations after a federal grand jury indicted him for possessing a stolen firearm and being a prohibited person from owning a gun.
Shaun Sporrer, 41, was indicted on April 2, 2013, and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno the same day. Sporrer pled not guilty to the indictment, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years of custody, a $250,000 fine, or both, as well as 3 years of supervised release and a $100 Special Assessment. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation into Sporrer’s firearm possession is being conducted by the Jones County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller is prosecuting the case.
Sporrer was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal after his indictment. A trial date has not yet been set.
It’s worth noting that the charge against Sporrer is merely an accusation, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
