Muskegon Officials Fined for Disability Access Violations
Washington, D.C. – In a shocking turn of events, officials from the city of Muskegon, Mich., have been ordered to improve accessibility to public programs and facilities for individuals with disabilities.
The agreement, reached under Project Civic Access, a wide-ranging initiative to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), will require the city to make numerous physical modifications to its facilities, including parking, routes into the buildings, entrances, public telephones, restrooms, service counters, and drinking fountains.
‘Access to public programs and facilities is a civil right, and individuals with disabilities must have the opportunity to participate in public programs, services and activities on an equal basis with their neighbors,’ said Thomas E. Perez, Assistant Attorney General of the Civil Rights Division.
The agreement with Muskegon, which will be in effect for five years, also requires the city to survey facilities not reviewed by the department, make necessary accessibility modifications, post notice of ADA provisions, provide accessible polling places, ensure the county’s official website is accessible, and implement a plan to ensure the accessibility of sidewalks and curb ramps throughout the city.
Meanwhile, in a separate agreement with the city of Cheyenne, Wyo., officials were ordered to make physical modifications to the city’s multi-use arena, primarily used for ice sports, concerts, and other entertainment events, to ensure accessibility for individuals with mobility disabilities.
Under the agreement, the city of Cheyenne will make modifications, including providing an accessible elevator, wheelchair seating areas, and accessible routes to entrances and facility amenities.
The agreements reflect a major commitment by city officials to make their programs and facilities accessible, and the Justice Department is commending their efforts to attain equal access for all residents.
