COLUMBIA, SC – Leroy Anthony Griffin, 30, of Myrtle Beach, is staring down a potential two-decade federal prison sentence after being indicted on charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute oxycodone. The indictment, unsealed today, alleges Griffin knowingly participated in a scheme to flood the streets with the highly addictive opioid.
United States Attorney Beth Drake announced the single-count indictment, a stark warning to those attempting to profit from the opioid crisis ravaging communities across the nation. If convicted, Griffin faces a maximum penalty of 20 years behind bars and a crippling $1,000,000 fine – a steep price for peddling pain.
The investigation, a collaborative effort, involved the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Tactical Diversion Squad, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, and assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, DEA Florence Office, and the Fifteenth Circuit Drug Enforcement Unit. This wasn’t a lone wolf operation; authorities clearly spent considerable time and resources building a case against Griffin and his alleged co-conspirators.
Details of the alleged conspiracy remain scarce, but the charge itself paints a grim picture. Oxycodone, a powerful pain reliever, is frequently diverted from legitimate medical channels and sold illegally on the black market, fueling addiction and contributing to a surge in overdose deaths. The DEA’s Tactical Diversion Squad specializes in tracking these illicit pipelines.
Assistant United States Attorney Lauren Hummel, of the Florence office, will be leading the prosecution. She’ll have the task of presenting evidence that proves beyond a reasonable doubt that Griffin actively conspired to distribute the dangerous drug. The wheels of justice are now turning, and Griffin will have his day in court.
It’s crucial to remember, as the United States Attorney stated, that these are merely accusations at this stage. Griffin is presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, the gravity of the charges and the potential consequences underscore the federal government’s unwavering commitment to dismantling drug trafficking operations and holding those responsible accountable. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it develops.
