A Myrtle Beach man has pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges related to the distribution of heroin and fentanyl. Roberto Yamil Velez-Garcia, 30, entered a guilty plea in federal court in Florence, South Carolina, on Wednesday.
United States Attorney Beth Drake stated that Velez-Garcia faces a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment and a fine of $1,000,000 dollars for his role in the conspiracy.
The investigation into Velez-Garcia’s activities was led by agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Florence, South Carolina, and the Fifteenth Circuit Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) Conway, South Carolina. The agents had been investigating the sale of heroin and other illegal drugs in the Horry County, South Carolina area.
In December 2015, agents made a controlled purchase of a quantity of fentanyl from Velez-Garcia. A second controlled purchase of heroin from Velez-Garcia and a coconspirator was made in May 2016. After the purchase was made, Velez-Garcia and the coconspirator were arrested. A search warrant was executed at an apartment Velez-Garcia shared with the coconspirator. Agents recovered approximately 95 grams of heroin and two firearms from the apartment.
Assistant United States Attorney Christopher D. Taylor of the Florence office prosecuted the case. Velez-Garcia is scheduled to be sentenced after a presentence report has been prepared by the U.S. Probation Office.
