It was supposed to be a spectacle of grandeur, a celebration of brotherhood and pageantry. But on June 5, 1923, the Mystic Shrine’s grand parade on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington turned into a scene of utter chaos. Thousands of uniformed and drilled men marched for two miles from the Capitol to Washington Circles, waving flags and accompanied by the sounds of scores of bands. The long line of marchers presented a riot of color, a kaleidoscope of hues that would have been hard to match even in the most vibrant of settings.
