Boston – Nahant resident and land developer Gary P. DeCicco, 58, has been charged with federal extortion after allegedly orchestrating a violent assault on a local business owner. The incident occurred in 2015 when the victim refused to become a partner in his car dealership.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts, DeCicco sold land to the victim for $750,000 in approximately 2004 or 2005. When construction began on the land in 2013, DeCicco requested an interest in the dealership. His demand was rebuffed, prompting him to hire individuals to threaten and assault the business owner.
On January 11, 2015, the victim suffered a broken jaw during an attack at his business that was captured on surveillance video. DeCicco now faces up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
DeCicco’s arrest followed an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Boston this afternoon. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristina E. Barclay will handle the prosecution.
The charges against DeCicco are serious and carry significant penalties, reflecting the severity of the crime. Federal sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors will determine his final sentence, which is typically less than the maximum penalty.
DeCicco is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, according to federal rules of criminal procedure. The U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasized that the details contained in the complaint are merely allegations at this stage.
