Nathaniel Johnson Boychief, 30, of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 18 months for possession with intent to distribute heroin and oxycodone. The Kootenai tribal member pleaded guilty on August 23, 2016, and was formally sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Coeur d’Alene.
Senior U.S. District Judge Edward J. Lodge handed down the 18-month sentence, followed by three years of supervised release. Boychief was also ordered to pay a $600 fine—chump change compared to the weight of the charges he faced. The conviction stems from a coordinated law enforcement raid that turned up damning evidence hidden in plain sight.
According to court documents filed as part of the plea agreement, officers executing a search warrant discovered a locked safe inside Boychief’s bedroom. Inside? A stash of heroin and oxycodone—controlled substances tied directly to distribution-level quantities. The discovery alone sealed a strong federal case.
But it got worse. After Boychief was taken into custody, a search incident to arrest revealed even more drugs—heroin and oxycodone pills physically sewn into the lining of his underwear. The desperate concealment tactic didn’t fool investigators and only deepened the evidence against him.
The investigation was a joint operation involving the Kootenai Tribal Police, Bonner County Sheriff’s Department, Bonners Ferry Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The collaboration highlights the widening net law enforcement is casting across tribal and county lines to stem the tide of opioid trafficking.
U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson confirmed the sentencing, underscoring the federal government’s continued push to dismantle drug networks—even those operating in remote, rural communities like Bonners Ferry. For Boychief, the consequences are no longer avoidable: 18 months behind bars and a life now tethered to federal supervision.
