Luis Leyva Verduzco, Methamphetamine and Fentanyl Distribution, Idaho 2021

Luis Leyva Verduzco, 32, a Mexican national from Jerome, Idaho, is headed to federal prison for 82 months after being caught distributing methamphetamine and fentanyl in the Magic Valley. The sentence, handed down in Boise, marks the end of a two-year investigation into a stealth drug operation hidden in plain sight — inside a dairy farm’s milk house.

Court records show the Idaho State Police and DEA began tracking Verduzco in early 2020 after receiving credible tips about his role in regional drug trafficking. Surveillance intensified in March 2021 when officers observed Verduzco making a suspicious trip to a milk house on a Gooding County farm. He entered the building briefly, exited, and returned to his vehicle — a move that would later prove fatal to his freedom.

A search of the milk house uncovered 1,308.61 grams — nearly 2.88 pounds — of methamphetamine and 46.64 grams of fentanyl stashed inside a filing cabinet drawer. Investigators concluded Verduzco had stored the drugs there in an attempt to evade law enforcement. The combined weight and potency of the narcotics represented a significant threat to the community.

Verduzco was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, a federal offense that carried substantial prison time. Acting U.S. Attorney Rafael M. Gonzalez, Jr., of the District of Idaho, confirmed the sentence and praised the multi-agency collaboration that led to the arrest and conviction.

The case was prosecuted under the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) program, a federal initiative targeting high-level drug networks through coordinated intelligence and enforcement. Agencies involved included the Drug Enforcement Administration, Idaho State Police, Gooding and Jerome County Sheriff’s Offices, and the Gooding County Prosecutor’s Office.

Upon completion of his 82-month sentence, Verduzco will be turned over to immigration authorities for deportation to Mexico. The bust underscores the reach of synthetic drug networks into rural Idaho and the relentless pressure federal and local agencies are placing on traffickers operating in the region.
