The grim streets of Minnesota witnessed the downfall of a notorious Native Mob member, Tevin Jay Maurstad, who was sentenced to 270 months in federal prison for drug trafficking and firearms violations. The United States Attorney Erica H. MacDonald announced the severe sentence following a conviction on October 25, 2019.
Maurstad, aged 25 from Minneapolis, had a history of violence, as evidenced by his attempts to intimidate witnesses during the investigation. His sentencing was conducted before Judge Susan Richard Nelson in U.S. District Court in St. Paul.
Law enforcement officials stumbled upon Maurstad’s criminal activities on August 4, 2016, when they found methamphetamine and a loaded handgun in his vehicle. Another incident occurred on January 29, 2018, where he was caught with meth hidden in the paneling of a Chrysler 300 he was driving. During a search of a storage unit rented by Maurstad, federal agents recovered ammunition and firearm accessories, along with Native Mob paraphernalia.
This sentence is a testament to the efforts of various law enforcement agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, ATF, Morrison County Sheriff’s Office, Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and Minnesota Department of Corrections. The case was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods and Project Guardian initiatives.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Andrew R. Winter and Bradley M. Endicott prosecuted the case. Maurstad’s conviction included counts of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, felon in possession of a firearm, and felon in possession of ammunition.
