Local Man Indicted on Child Sex Abuse Charges
A 27-year-old Navajo man has been arraigned in federal court on charges of child sex abuse, according to a recent indictment.
Christian Apachito, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, was arraigned on two counts of child sex abuse. The indictment alleges that Apachito engaged in a sexual act with a child, identified as Jane Doe, on November 11, 2020.
At the time of the alleged abuse, Jane Doe was 12 years old but had not yet reached the age of 16.
The alleged crime took place on the Navajo Nation Crownpoint Reservation and was investigated by the FBI, with assistance from the Crownpoint Navajo Police Department.
Apachito was indicted on April 28 and will remain on conditions of release pending trial, which has not been scheduled.
If convicted, Apachito faces up to 15 years in prison for sexual abuse of a minor and a minimum of 30 years and up to life in prison for aggravated sexual abuse of a child with force or threat.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Pfizenmayer as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
