A U.S. Navy seaman’s sick obsession with child pornography has landed him in federal prison for five long years.
James Driver, 24, of Midland, Mich., was sentenced to five years in prison for possessing child pornography, announced Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.
Driver was also slapped with five years of supervised release after completing his prison term, and he must register as a sex offender as a condition of release – a harsh reality he’ll have to face for the rest of his life.
Driver, a former U.S. Navy seaman stationed in Japan, was found guilty of one count of possessing child pornography after a four-day jury trial in May 2012. He admitted in an interview to being interested in child pornography for the past five years.
The case originated from a Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) investigation into an individual suspected of possessing and distributing child pornography using a peer-to-peer file sharing network.
“This case is a stark reminder of the horrors that exist in the dark corners of the internet,” said Breuer. “The Department of Justice is committed to pursuing those who exploit children and bringing them to justice.”
Driver’s sentence is a result of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006.
The case was prosecuted by CEOS Trial Attorney Mi Yung Park and former CEOS Trial Attorney Thomas Franzinger, with assistance from the FBI’s Innocent Images Unit and NCIS.
Driver will have to live with the consequences of his actions, but the real question remains – how many more are out there, exploiting our nation’s most vulnerable citizens?
As the Grimy Times continues to expose the dark underbelly of our society, one thing is clear – we must stay vigilant in the fight against child exploitation and abuse.
