HOUSTON – Ndem Oduu, a 50-year-old Houston resident, has been sentenced to serve 45 months in federal prison for his role in a stimulus check theft scheme. The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.
Oduu pleaded guilty on March 14 for appropriating a victim’s $1,200 Economic Impact Payment, known as a stimulus check. He deposited the funds into his own account, taking advantage of the government’s response to the economic damage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
U.S. District Judge Charles R. Eskridge ordered Oduu to pay restitution in the amount of $1,867 and receive three years of supervised release following his prison term. The court also noted its hope that Oduu would lead a productive life upon release from custody.
In addition to the theft charge, Oduu was found to possess thousands of pages of fraudulent documents related to government loans and tax credits in his apartment. This evidence underscored the scale of his fraudulent activities.
The investigation into Oduu’s crimes was led by the Social Security Administration-Office of Inspector General and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Hileman prosecuted the case, ensuring justice for the victims of this financial crime.
Oduu will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility, where he will begin serving his sentence.
