TYLER, Texas – The grim tale of financial deceit reaches a verdict as Michael Kord Chapman, a 26-year-old from Ainsworth, Nebraska, has been sentenced to five years probation for his audacious scheme involving mortgaged cattle. U.S. Attorney John M. Bales revealed the sentence, which also mandates restitution of $83,622.42 to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Services Agency.
Chapman, now 26, pleaded guilty on August 22, 2012, to conversion of mortgaged property. The court heard that between February 18, 2011, and April 7, 2011, Chapman sold roughly 158 head of cattle worth over $83,400 – cattle that were pledged as collateral for a loan from the Farm Services Agency. Rather than fulfilling his obligation to repay the loan, Chapman pocketed the proceeds.
“The sale of mortgaged property is a flagrant abuse of trust and a serious offense,” said U.S. District Judge Leonard Davis, who oversaw the sentencing. “Chapman’s actions not only defrauded the Farm Services Agency but also potentially put honest ranchers at risk.”
The investigation into Chapman’s scheme was spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Office of the Inspector General, Office of Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Noble prosecuted the case with unwavering determination.
As a result of his conviction, Chapman now faces a five-year probation term and is legally obligated to return $83,622.42 to the Farm Services Agency. His actions have not only tarnished his own reputation but also cast a shadow over the livestock industry in Texas.
This case serves as a stark reminder that even in rural communities, white-collar crimes can have profound consequences for individuals and institutions alike.”
