Marcus Lee Dorsey, 36, of Loup City, Nebraska, was sentenced to four years in federal prison for Attempted Trafficking with Respect to Involuntary Servitude and Forced Labor, a crime rooted in a sordid online attempt to pay for sex with a minor during the 2015 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
The conviction came after Dorsey responded to an undercover advertisement posted by South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation agents, advertising sex with young girls. Believing he was negotiating with a third party offering a 15-year-old girl, Dorsey arranged to meet and pay $70 for sexual acts — a deal that never materialized, because the contact was an undercover agent.
Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken handed down the sentence on November 10, 2016, in U.S. District Court, also ordering two years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Dorsey was taken into custody immediately by the U.S. Marshal’s Service.
The case was part of a sweeping federal crackdown targeting predators exploiting major public events. The 2015 Sturgis rally — a magnet for hundreds of thousands — became a flashpoint for law enforcement to expose those seeking to profit from or participate in child sex trafficking via the Internet.
Dorsey was one of four men arrested and federally indicted in the operation, which was a joint effort between the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, the Rapid City Police Department, and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office. The coordinated sting highlighted the growing role of digital surveillance in catching would-be traffickers.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Collins prosecuted the case, which U.S. Attorney Randolph J. Seiler called a clear message: ‘Those who seek to exploit children — online or on the open road — will be met with full federal force.’ Dorsey’s conviction underscores the government’s aggressive stance against sex trafficking networks operating under the radar of major public events.
