Saiful Islam, a 39-year-old Bangladeshi national, has been extradited from Brazil to Texas to face charges for his role in a human smuggling conspiracy. Islam allegedly assisted other smugglers by facilitating the travel of illegal aliens from Brazil and other locations in South America, Central America, and Mexico to the US. The scheme involved taking the aliens to the southern border and instructing them to enter the country by wading across the Rio Grande or jumping a border fence. Islam was extradited on April 10 and is set to make his initial appearance in US federal court in Laredo.
According to the indictment, Islam carried out the scheme for payment, putting the lives of numerous individuals at risk. The investigation was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations, with assistance from various agencies, including the US Border Patrol, US Marshals Service, and Interpol.
If convicted, Islam faces up to 15 years in federal prison for human smuggling and up to 10 years for conspiracy to bring and/or encourage and induce an alien to enter the US. He also faces a possible $250,000 maximum fine. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney Leslie Cortez and Joint Task Force Alpha detailee/Trial Attorney Spencer M. Perry.
The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs played a significant role in securing Islam’s arrest and extradition from Brazil. The department thanks its Brazilian law enforcement counterparts for making the extradition possible.
