In a failed child smuggling attempt, a mother, a stranger, and a scammer were caught in Laredo, Texas. Nanzy Rodriguez-Sanchez, an Austin resident, allegedly paid Jesus Luciano $5,000 to bring her 8-year-old child into the US by bus on October 2, 2025.
Luciano, a stranger to the child, provided a fake birth certificate claiming the child as his own, but authorities later discovered it belonged to another child. Maribel Jaimes-Hernandez, 27, allegedly provided the birth certificate for $1,000.
Rodriguez-Sanchez and Jaimes-Hernandez face up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted. Luciano, who pleaded guilty, also faces up to 10 years.
The investigation was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations and Customs and Border Protection. Assistant U.S. Attorney Manuel A. Cardenas Jr. is prosecuting the case.
