A brazen human smuggling attempt was foiled in Texas when an out of state truck driver, Juan Nasario-Reyes, was caught with 42 illegal aliens locked in a hot trailer. The incident occurred on May 16, when Nasario-Reyes arrived at a checkpoint and claimed his vehicle was empty. However, a K-9 alert led law enforcement to discover four illegal aliens concealed inside the cab and 38 more in the trailer, which had been latched shut from the outside with a temperature of approximately 92.5 degrees.
The truck driver’s arrest was part of a larger operation, with 271 cases filed in the Southern District of Texas from May 15-21, involving immigration and border security-related crimes. A total of 249 illegal aliens are charged with unlawfully being in the United States, with many having previous convictions related to narcotics, immigration offenses, and violent crimes.
Three other cases involve illegal aliens from Mexico who were allegedly found unlawfully in the United States. One, Santos Rivera-Garcia, has a significant prior conviction for felony illegal reentry and was ordered to serve 63 months in federal prison in 2022. Despite being removed from the country in April, he was discovered near Mission less than a month later.
The charges are part of Operation Take Back America, which aims to crack down on immigration and border security-related crimes. The operation has resulted in a total of 273 charges, with many more expected to follow.
