Smugglers Prey on Migrant Children
Washington D.C. – In a disturbing trend, smugglers are taking advantage of vulnerable migrant children, leaving them at the mercy of violent gangs and ruthless cartels, according to Attorney General Eric Holder.
Holder met with his counterparts from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras in Mexico City to address the issue of unaccompanied minors crossing the Southwest border of the United States. The group discussed strategies to confront smugglers, gangs, and cartels that victimize and exploit these children.
“Attorney General Holder attended a joint meeting in Mexico City today with his counterparts from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras,” said Justice Department spokesman Brian Fallon. “The group discussed ways to improve public safety across Central America in order to address the underlying factors that have contributed to the flow of unaccompanied minors across the Southwest border of the United States.”
The group considered strategies to combat the smugglers, gangs, and cartels who prey on these vulnerable children. Holder and his counterparts are determined to put an end to this heinous crime.
Going forward, the Attorneys General agreed to create a high-level working group to develop an integrated strategy to deal efficiently with this issue. The working group will hold its first meeting within the coming weeks to develop a coordinated plan of action that will be presented at a subsequent meeting of the attorneys general.
