On May 5, a deadly armed robbery shook the small town of Salado, Texas, leaving one man dead. Colton Carter, 20, and Donivan Bynum, 18, both from Troy, have been arrested and charged with conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery, also known as Hobbs Act violations. The two allegedly set up and participated in the robbery, with Carter acting as the mastermind and Bynum serving as the lookout.
According to court documents, investigators found implicating messages and phone calls on Carter’s phone, which led them to believe he had planned the robbery. The FBI, along with the Temple Police Department, Milam County Sheriff’s Office, and Belton Police Department, have been investigating the case.
Carter and Bynum face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. A federal district court judge will determine their sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Blanton.
The community is still reeling from the deadly robbery, and the arrests of Carter and Bynum bring some sense of justice to the victim’s family. However, the case is still ongoing, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
