Seattle’s grim streets saw justice served as Justin Miles Jasper, a 22-year-old Nevada man, was sentenced today to three years in prison and three years of supervised release for his brazen heist of a stolen truck loaded with firearms and homemade explosives.
Jasper, the perpetrator behind the daring caper, pleaded guilty in November 2013 to transporting a stolen vehicle, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of destructive devices. His sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan, who highlighted the dangerous nature of Jasper’s actions.
The incident unfolded on July 3, 2013, when University of Washington Police officers apprehended Jasper in a 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 pick-up truck with Montana plates. The truck, reported stolen from Butte, Montana, was loaded with a Stevens Model 311A double-barrel shotgun and a Mauser Model 1895 bolt-action rifle, both stolen from the same owner.
Inside the truck, police also discovered six Molotov cocktails, raising concerns about Jasper’s intentions. However, records indicate that no specific plan was uncovered during the investigation. Despite this, U.S. District Judge Ricardo S. Martinez emphasized the public danger posed by Jasper’s possession of such weapons and explosives.
As part of his sentence, Jasper is required to participate in mental health counseling, a measure recommended by both sides. The Bureau of Prisons will recommend a facility offering mental health treatment during Jasper’s incarceration. Judge Martinez commended law enforcement for their thorough investigation, which led to the successful prosecution of this case.
The FBI, University of Washington Police Department, and Seattle Police Department collaborated in investigating Jasper’s crime. Assistant United States Attorney Todd Greenberg prosecuted the case with unwavering dedication.
