Las Vegas, NV – A staggering 6,323 pounds of unused, unwanted, and expired prescription medications were recovered in Nevada’s latest National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The event, a part of the nationwide DEA initiative, saw law enforcement agencies and collection sites across the state come together to combat the opioid epidemic.
United States Attorney Nicholas A. Trutanich for the District of Nevada praised the results, stating, ‘Nevadans recognize that combating the opioid epidemic starts with prevention.’ The U.S. Attorney’s Office is dedicated to community engagement in this ongoing public health and safety crisis.
Nationally, the total weight collected was a whopping 937,443 pounds, demonstrating the collective effort across the country. Nevada’s contribution of over three tons of prescription drugs underscores the scale of the issue and the importance of safe disposal methods.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drug overdose deaths in the U.S. reached a tragic 70,237 in 2017. The DEA’s Take Back Day is designed to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible way to dispose of prescription drugs, thus playing a crucial role in curbing abuse and misuse.
