New Haven Drug Kingpin Chawn Battle Sentenced to Prison

New Haven’s notorious drug kingpin, Chawn Battle, 49, has been handed a 21-month federal prison sentence following a DEA investigation that unraveled a vast drug trafficking network.

Battle was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea in Hartford for his role as a cocaine supplier to the crime syndicate led by Michael Smith, also known as ‘Head.’

Smith was previously intercepted on a wiretap discussing an attempted shooting against a rival dealer and has since been arrested.

Battle’s criminal history is long and storied, including a 2001 federal conviction for distributing more than one kilogram of PCP, which landed him a 151-month sentence.

The investigation involved the DEA New Haven Task Force, IRS Criminal Investigation Division, and multiple local police departments. Assistant U.S. Attorneys John T. Pierpont, Jr., and Elena L. Coronado prosecuted the case through the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) Program.

Michael Smith awaits sentencing for drug, firearm, and money laundering charges after pleading guilty on April 15, 2021.
