New Haven’s Shaquille Pearson, 23, was sentenced today to 24 months in federal prison for the illegal possession of a firearm.
United States Attorney Deirdre M. Daly announced the sentence imposed by Chief U.S. District Judge Janet C. Hall following Pearson’s conviction on June 30, 2016.
Court documents revealed that officers from the New Haven Police Department discovered Pearson holding a sneaker containing a loaded 9mm pistol during a search of his Button Street residence. An additional .380 handgun was found hidden in another sneaker.
Pearson had prior felony convictions, including carrying a dangerous weapon and third-degree burglary. Federal law prohibits those with prior felony convictions from possessing firearms or ammunition that have moved in interstate or foreign commerce.
Since his arrest, Pearson has been detained, and on March 1, 2017, he pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Judge Hall also prohibited Pearson from interacting with any members of the ‘Slut Wave’ street gang during his supervised release term.
The New Haven Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter D. Markle.
