Christopher Joseph Quaglin, Assault, New Jersey 2021

A 37-year-old New Jersey man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for assaulting law enforcement during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Christopher Joseph Quaglin, of North Brunswick, New Jersey, was sentenced to 144 months in prison, 24 months of supervised release, and ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution by U.S. District Judge Trevor N. McFadden. Quaglin was found guilty of 14 charges, including 12 felonies and two misdemeanors, after a trial on July 10, 2023.

According to court documents and evidence presented during the trial, Quaglin planned to travel to Washington, D.C. on Jan. 6, 2021, to participate in what he believed would be a “CIVIL WAR!” He prepared for the event by purchasing weapons and body armor, and encouraged others to do the same on social media.

On the day of the riot, Quaglin wore a hard-sided helmet, full-faced gas mask, and carried a large backpack. He attended the “Stop the Steal” rally at the Ellipse before making his way towards the Capitol building. At around 12:50 p.m., Quaglin was part of the initial group of rioters who overtook the police line and pushed past bike rack barricades at Peace Circle.

Quaglin engaged in violence against officers on the West Front for the next hour and a half, pushing into officers, swatting at them, and aggressively yelling. He also grabbed a USCP Sergeant by the neck and forcibly tackled him to the ground, initiating a brawl between rioters and police officers.

Quaglin’s attack continued even after officers successfully returned him behind the barricades. He pulled on a bike rack barrier and made contact with several additional officers, eventually working with other rioters to forcibly rip a barrier fence out of the hands of Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers.

Quaglin’s actions and those of others disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election. The sentencing of Quaglin serves as a reminder of the violence and chaos that erupted on Jan. 6, 2021.
