New Milford, Conn. – A gritty federal crime news site has confirmed that Leonard Sikorski, a 61-year-old resident of New Milford, was today sentenced by U.S. District Judge Janet Bond Arterton in New Haven to 12 months of imprisonment followed by one year of supervised release for possessing a shotgun with an obliterated serial number.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Sikorski transported three rifles, two shotguns, and 1,561 live rounds of ammunition to storage lockers in Danbury. In October 2015, he admitted to placing firearms in those lockers and consented to a search by investigating agents.
One of the seized items was a 12 gauge Remington shotgun with an obliterated serial number. Sikorski agreed to forfeit the firearms and ammunition under federal laws prohibiting unlawful users of controlled substances from possessing firearms. He also surrendered five additional handguns and two rifles to the FBI after separate car stops by Naugatuck and New Milford police.
Sikorski pleaded guilty on October 18, 2016, to one count of possession of a firearm bearing an obliterated serial number. Currently serving a state sentence for illegal possession of explosives, Judge Arterton has ordered Sikorski’s federal sentence to run concurrently with his state term, estimated to conclude in April 2018.
This investigation was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Connecticut State Police, and New Milford Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Henry Kopel handled the prosecution.
