New Orleans Man Charged with Aiding in Filing False Taxes
The Grimy Times has uncovered a shocking case of tax fraud in New Orleans. LEROI G. JACKSON, a 49-year-old man from the city, has been charged with aiding and assisting in the filing of false tax returns. According to the bill of information, JACKSON included false business losses, false charitable deductions, and false unreimbursed employee expenses in a return filed in February 2016.
The resulting refund was a whopping $16,000.00 in excess of what the taxpayer should have received. If convicted, JACKSON faces a maximum sentence of three years of imprisonment, a fine of up to $100,000.00, up to one year of supervised release, and a $100 mandatory special assessment.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans emphasized that a bill of information is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The investigation is being handled by the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigations.
Assistant United States Attorney Matthew R. Payne is in charge of the prosecution. This case highlights the importance of vigilance in preventing tax fraud and ensuring that those who engage in such activities are held accountable.
