New Orleans Man Sentenced for Lying to FBI
A New Orleans man has been sentenced to three years of probation for making false statements to the FBI about a fraudulent BP oil spill claim.
Jetty Hui, a 44-year-old business owner of Cabinets and Countertops Direct in Lakeview, pleaded guilty to one count of making false statements to the FBI in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1001.
According to court documents, Hui submitted fraudulent documentation of losses to his business to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Trust after the April 20, 2010, Deepwater Horizon explosion. He received approximately $72,500 in funds on December 2, 2010, and later lied to the FBI about the veracity of his claim during an interview in May 2012.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in bringing the case to justice.
The prosecution of this case was handled by Carter K. D. Guice, Jr., Assistant U.S. Attorney, Disaster Fraud Coordinator for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Hui was also ordered to pay $72,500 in restitution to British Petroleum (BP). The sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown will ensure that Hui is held accountable for his actions and that the victims of his fraud are compensated.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity and honesty in all aspects of life, and the consequences that come with making false statements to law enforcement.
